Here in the Netherlands they have decided that Fireworks are banned this year for the New years celebration.
This is an attempt to reduce the amount of people that are injured by fireworks, in order to give the hospitals more time to focus on the corona situation instead of aiding people who are injured by Fireworks.

Now, you might think ''yeah great!'' but I think that they are using corona as a helping hand in the firework ban that they wanted for years. For the last few years more and more politicians asked for a ban on fireworks, in order to reduce environmental pollution and in order to reduce injuries / fires related to fireworks.
It's pretty obvious to me that they want to ban fireworks for every upcoming year, and only allow cities to have a firework show instead of allowing people to buy and light fireworks themselves.

I'm against the ban, I do understand what they're trying to achieve but I don't think it will help. Fireworks are already banned all year except for new years day, so the big firework fans are already waiting an entire year to finally be able to do their hobby in their home country without fear of fines and now that is taken away too.
I also think that without fireworks it won't really be a new years celebration, this is personal but for as long as I've been here new years was the thing you went in with Fireworks. I'd wish that my cousin can experience the fun that I had with fireworks, going out with friends and lighting small fireworks and just kind of (fucking around) with it.

Plus I don't think it's doing much good right now, a lot of people are against it and a lot of those people are willing to push the limits. In certain places they're doing nightly riots, in my city I've ((observed)) riots against the new rules that led to roadblocks being placed on main roads and then lit on fire. You've also got a spike in illegal fireworks now, the ones that are classified as a ''Class 4'' bomb are easier obtainable then ever and cheaper too.

Anyway, I know a bunch of you come from a country where fireworks are legal all year long so for some of you this might be just a ''well next time'' moment. But here it's only legal for one day a year, and last year was probably the last time.

In Australia, fireworks are completely illegal except if its run by a licensed vendor that the government has approved, which you know is almost 0 businesses.

This year in my state they've decided that they aren't going to do the massive city fireworks due to corona which much like you I was disappointed because what's a new years without fireworks, it's just like every other day then. I'm not sure about you but this years xmas was so lame, it was just like oh shit its Friday again big deal, didn't feel festive at all.

Now I do agree with the ban but I also don't, there are too many idiots on this planet so it makes sense why they'd ban it but its also like cmon let natural selection happen.

The illegal fireworks going off don't usually cause many issues, at least here they don't, and to be fair most cops are too busy doing other shit on new years, they can't be bothered telling some kid to stop lighting fireworks at the local park, so in a sense, it all works out fine anyway. Plus with the amount of shit China alone is pumping into the atmosphere I doubt a few fireworks are gonna cause harm ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    100% agree with you.

While I do understand the reasons for the ban, like you said: It's only allowed 1 day per year and I feel like they are using corona as an excuse, just to repeat the ban every year from now on.

I used to love lighting fireworks, now I don't anymore, but I'm still very excited every year to see all the fireworks go off.

Now that they are banned, I've been hearing fireworks going off here for the last week and I can imagine it will only get worse on new year's eve, even if it is illegal now.

I'm really going to miss the amount of fireworks I'd normally see, especially since this year, I celebrate it in a place where I can't even see that much anyway because of the houses/place.

For me, new year's eve isn't the same and doesn't feel as nice/comfy/celebrating without fireworks.

couldn't care less personally. fireworks get boring after 5 minutes anyway and annoying kids keep fucking around with fireworks even though it's not even new year's yet. i wouldn't mind if they banned it forever

don't see anything wrong with cities/neighborhoods hosting their own fireworks shows like they do in NYC, they'll look much better than people's own crappy fireworks and it's safer

ban is good. hospitals are over run. too many people getting covid. if everyone would just follow the lockdown the whole virus could've been eradicated in 2 weeks, but no... people gotta keep going out, shaking hands, having drinks at the bar, etc. 10,000 new cases every day, terrible.

and city-run shows is better visually too. what's better? judge yourself

    Yes and No.
A firework show is fine by me too, but I also want the option to light my own fire works. There's this feeling you experience when you light them that makes them fun, often times it's a moment to share with others. The other day I took my younger cousin to light a illegal fire work bomb that shook the entire neighborhood. Is it fun? Sort of, after 10 seconds the excitement is gone and it's just another regular day. But for that short moment before, during and after the firework goes off is something that I find exciting and fun. And sharing that with others one or two days a year is nice.

And kids fucking around with it, mwah who cares. I think that's part of it being only once a year, if we suddenly changed it to be legal all year everyone would fire rockets every evening but eventually it'd become normal and die down. If you have left over fireworks it's more tempting to fire them since it's illegal to have and just something you want to get rid off at that point.

    typical corona poster
And al though biased they are the truth, but this is the moment after the fireworks are lit. I can assure you that the location from where the city run fire works are dirty too.
And the hospital part I understand fully, they can spend their time better fighting corona instead of fighting little jerry who burnt his finger tip with a sparkler. But, I also think that at this point we kind of need to accept that corona is a part of humanity now and that we can't fully focus on it and let it take up all our recourses. At some point we would have to ban sharp object and hot drinks because it could cause people to end up in the hospitals.

they've been doing it all month. if there was a ban on sale and import of fireworks, this would be much harder to do. but i see you're one of them lel

hot drinks don't cause 1300 people to end up in the hospital all on a single night

yes city run fireworks will have trash too but it's localized/centralized and will be cleaned up by a small city-run crew, unlike in random back alleys/front yard the trash is scattered everywhere.

burning finger tip with sparkler is not hospital worthy, and i don't think sparklers are ban worthy nor are they illegal year round. most firework injuries have to do with eye damage, losing sight, or blowing hand off. that's not gonna happen with a city run show.

yes corona is a part of humanity only because people can't follow rules. again, if everyone followed the lockdown for 2 weeks the virus would be eradicated. "it is what it is" as trump says while usa is #1 in cases with 347K dead americans

hot drinks vs fireworks. no comparison. 1 is warm water, (that won't blind your eyesight), and the other is a literal explosive kek

For me the negative effects outweigh the good ones. People use fireworks incorrectly and they get hurt by it. Most people don't pick up the trash they have created, harming the environment. Police and ambulance workers get harassed while trying to do their job.

I get it, it's only one day and it is fun to look at, but I'd rather go to a central firework show than seeing how much harm it causes.

(Of course, a complete ban is almost impossible to achieve, with all the illegal firework and people still have ways to get the firework through other means.)

Yes, but, it's not exactly easy to hide a vibrantly colored explosive that shoots into the sky if they do get banned...

I currently have covid and I followed every single policy, distancing, and mask requirement that I saw. In fact, I only left my house TWICE in the preceding two weeks before I got a positive test and in neither of those times did I come within even 10 feet of another individual.

When fireworks were banned in the Fourth of July this year in California:

Over 1000+ calls to police in a single night. Idc about fireworks but I think a ban is not effective. I think heavily taxing fireworks will be more effective (just as a carbon tax reduces greenhouse gas emissions and tobacco tax reduces tobacco usage).

Wrong lol, parents are overly adamant about this stuff being followed and our family has a large medical background so they already know how it works.

Did they come into contact with anyone?

I am VERY LUCKY. There are 8 people living in my house (big Asian family and big house) and multiple people go outside multiple times every single day (with masks and social distancing though) ever since March. And none of us has gotten COVID yet.

    uncool;
    -noise pollution,
    -chemical and toxic gases,
-permanent damages on cats and dogs (pets),
    -kills birds,
-not good for the environment which is already fucked.
I think they must be banned for life, it's not even entertaining.

A ban on sale and imports doesn't stop something from coming into a country. And how often do you hear fireworks? We live in different cities, but here it's not something that I would call an annoyance. It's more like a train passing by your house every ten minutes. You get used to it.
And no, but I was making an overexaggerated point. All I'm saying is that if we want to lower people getting injured we should ban more things, in order to keep the hospitals more open for corona patients.
And yes, I am one of them with the class 4's kek

Cities here can handle the mess. Smaller towns are only littered for a day or two before they come through with the swipers.
And yes, I was overexaggerating to make a point.

And yeah, I don't think it would be fully eradicated but we'd be in a more control state of it.
But I see now that nobody gives a fuck and that we will have to live with it. That's not me saying I am breaking the rules, I try to keep my distance and come in contact with as little people as possible.

Good points, especially in the Netherlands the emergency services seem to get harassed a lot with fireworks.
    Especially Police.

And yeah, seeing a first time ban here it's pretty useless for the people who didn't buy store fireworks anyways.
Thinking about that makes me assume new years eve will be a violent night in the sky, if we only have illegal fireworks that means they're big and loud. You have little to no mixture of silent - light creation fireworks.

I think heavily taxing won't be a social option, to put it socially. All you do is screw over the few legal stores that keep it up all year with the governments bullshit and who put in 30k to make 5k profit for a few days per year. Those guys will lose income and will probably close up shop.
And taxing fireworks, oke.. So my... this guy buys his fireworks in Italy and sells them here (TAX FREE!?!) illegal product doesn't know taxes, only resell upscale to make profit.

-yes, rather fireworks than highway noise pollution.

-And? We can all work to reduce it but in my eyes we are a small factor of air pollution compared to the giant companies that blast gases into our air.

-Yes, physical or emotional. As much as I hated seeing my dog experience stress, as much as I can think that if we are adapting to the animals we should stop doing a lot of things that cause them stress or damage.

-Small amount, not good but still.

    - One day per year where it's absurdly damaging. I think that one person lighting a few in his backyard is minimal damage.

And I do think that they're entertaining so they shouldn't be banned for life.
I think a compromise can be made.

At least where I am currently we are going through a monsoonal event with heaps of rain..I’d say that’s a gift for us so that fireworks don’t go ahead and the spread of covid is prevented. Setting off fireworks without a license or whatever is not allowed but legit someone one street away in the suburbs had set off fireworks for Christmas lol. If people want to see fireworks for New Years they can just watch fireworks from a previous year on YouTube or something..they probably won’t even notice it’s from another year hahaha.

happy New Years everyone :-) I hope y’all are safe elsewhere in the world

Small or big doesn't matter, we all have to do our best to reduce every kind of pollution. And damaging the environment just to see some sparkly lights doesn't worth it. There are many people who are running campaigns to stop those "giant companies" from damaging our world.
    Still... Cruelty.
