Think of Skype. Once someone sees you in a conversation, they know your skype and could spam messages/requests. However on skype, users can block someone who does that. Discord is similar in the way that (unlike TS where offline messages are a thing but never used) you can message someone once you see them in the conversation/server and send requests. I don't give random people my skype, so I should not let random people have my discord. Unfortunately, since I am staff on the server, my discord has to show up in there. I have full right to block messages from random people without having to let them spam me first then punish, which is what I have enabled (blocking messages from people who aren't friends on the server). It would be a pain and a waste of time having to apply punishments for all the people who messaged me while I was at work or something. Punishing people for spam asking for help would be counter productive anyway since they would never get the help anyways from me (giving them help would give them more incentive to spam staff in the future with risk of punishment on discord). On the server, it's easier to kick them and message them back right away telling them what they did wrong. On discord they might not be online. It's better for most parties to have a rule against asking staff for help, so players don't waste their time trying to find help on discord (if they have read the rules. If not, that's on them).
That is just PM. In public chats, there will be a lot of messages where staff will not be online to see. They shouldn't have to scroll back and read all messages to see if someone needed help. Players who are trying to have a conversation shouldn't have to see spam of people asking for help either. Also, many staff will have online status while AFK or sending messages on discord and AFK the next moment. People will be angry with staff when their messages are not responded to.
Rip Staff lol
i'm still gonna use the teamspeak
Teamspeak probably won't be around much longer, unless this discord thing flops completely but it seems to be doing well so far. It has its kinks but it's still pretty new. They'll get worked out.
Hey, no kink shaming here.
Finally a Discord! :D
Love the discord app !
The Discord server is awesome!!!! I only use Discord now, I uninstalled Teamspeak on my computer 6 months ago, it's old and outdated, Discord is way better
Staff should make alt discord accounts that are unrelated to their personal accounts and use those in the server discord instead.
Or just toggle the option to not let people who are not friends message you, which works fine now. Having 2 accounts seems a bit unnecessary.
Didn't know that was a thing, thanks for informing me.
