when people think they're popular on a minecraft server when in all reality they're a socially outcasted nerd sitting behind a desk making "funny" posts on a forum and thinking they're "sassy" by following tumblr's social rules

Doesn't mean we have to treat others differently.
I know you're joking, but that's not even close to true for most of us.

It actually is. If you actually read some threads made here, all the suicidal people, outcasts, victims of depression, etc... It is quite accurate.

    But on topic now.
General idea behind this topic is ok, and I support it. But will it change anything?
    No.

That is because of one simple reason.
This community runs on staff/high ranked people's ass kissing.

Excuse me for my language, but sadly, it is true. Only groups of people I see on the server, forums, teamspeak, are focused around current staff members or ex ones.

Unless you are a VIP on the server (not the rank but the actual meaning of it), you will not be acknowledged.
I speak from my personal experience. When I first joined, I was being ignored completely. But then, suddenly, as soon as I went from the greyname to staff, besties started appearing out of nowhere.
That is ancient history now, but the trend continues. Staff members are doing a good job, and we all appreciate it. But there are new staff appreciation topics busting out every single day, staff this, staff that... It only results in one thing.

Yes, some staff members are keeping it real. They keep their heads cool and do what is expected of them. Others get this "fanaticism" get to their heads. They get the sudden feel that they are better people than others. And fan circles start to form around them. This results in worse performance and favoritism.
Those problems are what is killing this community from the inside.
I am not saying all staff members are like that, but I have more than enough valid arguments to back me up through the history of this server (and not just the ancient one this time).

Feel free to call me wrong, or mark my statements as invalid, but as the person who has been through this, someone who MOST of the people that were "friends" with me don't even say hi to anymore, but do to new staff members, and speaking this from my own neutral point of view, I stand sure behind my words.

This is the real problem here.
Open your eyes. Start treating eachother as equals. Ranks don't make a person.

I get the average person might not feel comfortable putting themselves out there. But I feel like staff could be a little more welcoming no hate pls since they 'represent' the server in a way..
Not neccessarily "Welcome!1!1 Hello!! Wanna be besties!?!?" but its probably pretty awkward for newcomers to say hi to random people in the lobby. A simple hello would probably be appreciated.
    No kill pls.

Before I was a staff member, and before I was a donator, I played KitPvP. I guess you could say I was a "random" leather just trying to get kills like everyone else. I noticed that the donators would team, and talk, and in general they seemed to have a great time. Obviously they know each other, and at one point they were all just like I was.

All I did was compliment someone's skin, and that's how I truly made my first friend but I won't say her name in case she doesn't want that. She invited me to teamspeak, and well here I am today. So that's how it started for me, I'm sorry if this is off topic but my point is, take initiative. This could go for both sides of the argument.

I usually don't express my thoughts like this, and I just feel like I should connect with the community more. Thanks. c:

I don't really care about my popularity, I mean I just joined the forums yesterday, introduced myself to some people, said some hi, hello's, tried cheering people up or makin' them laugh or stuff like that, and now I've made quite a lot of friends :)

On the server, I remember when I was a non-donor, I tried my best to get noticed. I even built a HUGE hotel on creative 1. I decided to advertise, nobody really wanted to came except for a few other non-donors like me. That completely changed after I donated about 50 dollars for a Legend rank. People acknowledged me, That was about a year ago. Apparently it takes money to enjoy being on a server.

I know right, who needs popularity when you just have to have friends, family, a lair.. seriously, nowadays people just think about being cool, looking nice, trying to fit in.. when they just don't see the most important thing we need are family and friends? We don't even need a lair, our family is our lair. We don't even need anything when you have your friends' shoulder to cry on or to make you laugh..
Even though, humans are a creature in need of a society (because we all born uncomplete, etc..) it doesn't necessarily means that we need to be rude/ignore others that aren't as "cool" as you might be..
You were once a "unpopular" one, just think of it before acting.. Say Hello to everybody and be jello to nobody.
Respect everybody if you want to be respected.. even though we're not all perfect, we can always try our best.. Just a simple action, can make everything change and make at least one smile in anyone..

I absolutely agree. You don't need everybody to think you're amazing if you already have friends and family who think you're amazing. Its like asking for more than you need.

I joined later most than everyone. It was HARD to find people to talk to, because everyone has their little "groups". If anyone new reads this, just try to talk to a popular member. I'm sure if you say hi or start a conversation with at least 4 of them, 2 won't ignore you. Who knows, maybe you'll find you're own group one day

    I totally agree.

I only started playing in, what, June 2015? I went to OITC to make some friends but the legends were bullies. Today I no longer play the server, but still want to be friendly and kind toward other people on the forums/community/other servers.

And, as @CapsaLock said, Treat other people the same way you want to be treated.

If you're new and you're looking to make friends I wouldn't really recommend trying to reach out to "popular" people. Mainly because they most likely won't acknowledge you. I'd suggest just talking to people who you have a lot in common with. Say you love to play factions and you see someone on everyday playing, message him. Play together and get to know each other. It's rather simple and that's how I made some of my closest friends when I was new.

I agree with most of the posts in this thread. I have personally seen how a rank definitely increases. e.g when I was a non donor I was consistently ignored in chat. This was frustrating to say the least. Even when I donated and started hanging out in the lobby I only gained a few friends (which I still have today). Then suddenly a few weeks ago everyone wanted to be my friend and to be honest it isn't always enjoyable having a lot of people who only hang out with you because you of your rank.
