Logan Paul's screwup

If you haven't heard, Logan Paul, a terrible vlogger on YouTube and the brother of the infamous Jake Paul, recorded a vlog on December 31st where he went into a forest in Japan called Aokigahara. The forest is infamous for being one of the most popular suicide sites in the world, where around 100 people intentionally kill themselves annually. Paul knew this beforehand, yet decided to still film in the forest. He later said that the vlog was intended as a joke, though I don't see anything remotely funny about hundreds of lifeless bodies hanging off branches.

In the video, he actually found a body of a suicide victim, and approached it, all the while filming it directly. He overlaid the scene with sad music and later laughed about how serious the video ended up being. Must be a shocker that suicide isn't funny. He blurred out the victim's face but kept the rest of the body uncensored. Despite his knowledge that he literally filmed a corpse for thousands of children, he uploaded the video onto YouTube, taking it down less than a day later.

Some YouTubers began talking about it already; I was introduced to it through a YouTuber called Kavos. To my utter surprise, there were Logan Paul fans down in the comment section who were still defending Paul and/or attacking Kavos. One of these comments particularly stood out for me, so I decided to reply to it myself.

 

Making a video about the topic itself was alright but the dude should have just cut the camera as soon as he and his crew realized that they had found a true suicide victim in that forest. I watched that part, it was saddening and depressing and Logan putting the camera all up to this man who was once in so much pain really strikes a nerve to me since I know people and have had thoughts myself about suicide in the past. Showing the guy all up and close was disrespectful and unnecessary; if this were any other youtuber, Youtube would be dealing with this sort of thing immediately and ensure it doesn't happen again. But no, they go ahead and put his video on trending.

 

He apologized, it's okay now.

 

In my opinion, a fake apology just so people will continue to give him attention.

 

I'm sure that's the ideology that his fans go by, but no amount of fake tears and voice cracks will make me sympathize with him.

 

It's still fucking disgusting what he did. All he did was make seemingly fake apology which was pretty much required in order to give himself a positive image even after his actions. He should've never laughed about suicide, he shouldn't have continued filming as soon as he saw the dead body. Just because he made an apology it doesn't make his actions any less disgusting.

As the OP stated, no amount of fake tears will make me sympathize with him.

 

I'm glad he apologized but really, it was expected after the ginormous amount of hate that he got (that he rightfully did deserve). The only thing I have a problem with is if he actually means it. All these youtubers like himself, his brother, and all that have made mistakes and put out petty, sympathetic apology videos claiming that they've learned and will change but are instead reading off a script and trying to make the whole thing blow over. yes I gotta admit I doubt Logan read a script, his apology seems sincere and I personally accept it (it's up to everyone else if they want to decide to accept his apology). It saddens me though that these big, young youtubers need to fuck up this hard to get it in their head that they don't rule this earth, that they can't do everything they want.

As I said above, I do think Logan was being sincere but it's ultimately up to him to prove that to his fans.

Obviously he fucked up. I watched the video when it was uploaded and what was going through my mind was, "Oh shit, this is terrible".
A lot of people gave him hate for laughing at the video, but I feel like people react differently towards trauma. You obviously wouldn't skip in joy if you found a dead body, but it's almost surreal to experience it so suddenly. Therefore I think that aspect of the hate he's getting is dumb.
I also think it's dumb that people are saying that his channel be deleted. It's literally his career, he apologized both on Youtube and on Twitter. If it doesn't seem sincere, then that's his burden.

I also wanted to point out that this video was holding the #10 spot on the trending page, when Youtube clearly has control over that. Over the past year, dumb videos with 100,000 views have been on the trending page, when others that blow up with a few million in a few days weren't. The whole Youtube algorithm was kind of fucked up (just like Instagram's feed algorithm). It's partly Youtube's fault for allowing the video to grow more of an audience by displaying it on the Trending page. Not saying that Logan Paul isn't already popular, I'm one of his subscribers and I like his videos. I'm pretty sure his channel is the fastest growing one on Youtube or something like that. But that definitely contributed to the scale of how much hate he's getting.

Anyways, what about that girl that hung herself up on a tree on Youtube and live streamed it? There was a thread made about that.
It's ironic to me that people on this thread are saying "oh he shouldn't have shown that" when Kathrine made a thread about a year ago, encouraging the people on this forum to go watch the video of the suicide to "see what bullying can do". Of course I was against that, and those are the same people who were saying, "no it will teach a lesson to bullies". Here's that thread.

It's just the internet blowing it up. Yeah it was a fucked up thing to do, but he apologized and that's that. There's really nothing else he can do in terms of his mistake.
What he can do in general, though, is spread awareness of the issue. He also did that in his video. Might not seem sincere due to the showing of the dead body, but he did it anyway. He could probably do more in terms of spreading awareness, and I imagine that he will in order to get back on steady ground.

 

Youtube has always been known to like the Paul brothers, I'm almost certain the only reason it was removed off trending was because Logan removed it or Youtube had to due to the abnormal amount of hate. I said this above but if any other big youtuber did this, such as PewDiePie, the adpocalypse would return for a third time and they would be punished heavily.

Okay, my opinion is that what Logan Paul did was horribly disrespectful. It's horrible that he thinks a fake "I'm So Sorry" video would just stop all the hate he's getting. Just because you say sorry for something, that doesn't mean it's all water under the bridge, it's still there, you just said you regret it. A lot of people have done stuff in the past that they just want to drop and forget, but this situation is different because he took suicide as a joke and just messed with the body like it was a children's toy. It's showing a little something that he's trying that hard to get people to forgive and forget about his actions and just put it behind, but something like this cannot be forgotten. People are still on RiceGum's ass about the Content Cop about him, does he really think that just saying sorry would help this? Spoiler alert, it won't. He's very lucky he isn't facing any charges or any lawsuits from the family of that poor man whose life was taken by suicide.
Just gets me angry that he thinks something like this can slide just with a video of him saying stuff to a camera.

What? Authority doesn't come into it, it's an interpretation - a rather fair one at that.

Someone whose basic morals and human decency isn't compromised by the lust for views and attention would firmly oppose setting foot in a "suicide forest" with their camera and friends and record themselves laughing in front of someone who'd recently taken their own life. It's a fair statement to say; it's a surreal experience and people cope with it in different ways, but it's another thing to put it out to an audience, of which are predominately kids. The sad thing? The core audience isn't phased by it.

Conclusion: he did something despicable, something that was premeditated, he's going to receive insurmountable backlash for it.

 

Why am I not surprised.

He started off as a "mediocre" (at the best) Viner, migrated to YouTube to ruin all of the rates that regular YouTubers were getting and now he's doing things for attention. It's not a shocker.
