So, real talk here, it's been on my mind a lot, why has negativity been rewarded so much these days? I know a lot of people like to roast people for the sake of it, and it tends to be responded with "roasted!!!" "lmao" "lol", or something along those lines, but honestly, it's hypocritical if you're going to be the only one doing it, especially if you're going to call it "wrong" or "unfair" for having it done to you.

If being roasted hurts, don't roast other people, simple as that.
That's just my opinion though, let me know what you guys think

Apparently being nice is considered being "weak" nowadays and because of this people turn to being rude/negative to feel like they fit in and such.
I don't get it, but apparently that's how it is oops.

how is negativity rewarded??? people don't roast people for no reason. i mean most of the time it's just playing around. the problem is most people are just really really really sensitive (: and i don't agree that people are rude/negative to try to fit in. that's just ridiculous.

    That's not even true.

I don't understand where this is coming from, no one complains about being roasted. The reason why people are really negative nowadays is because of all the drama. There are some people who roast for no reason, but I just mainly do it for fun and when something really bothers me. You're blowing shit out of proportion, don't ya think?

Maybe nobody complains to you but people do complain about being roasted. It's not just about roasting either, the highlight of the thread is negativity being rewarded, I used roasting as an example.

If so many people are sensitive, doesn't that mean something? Maybe they have feelings?

A lot of people on the internet have grown incredibly thick skin to the point that they literally don't care about what other people think/feel, and it's just plain obvious. The internet is slowly getting further and further from a safe-haven (especially after net-neutrality).

It's not "rewarded", people usually either are being sarcastic or defending the person they're supporting. There's nothing wrong with joking around with other people if they know you are. I don't think saying "Roasted!!!" and stuff like that is really a serious thing, it's just a saying that is mostly ignored by the two people involved having trouble. I don't understand how it is "rewarded" if it's not even paid attention to or even serious.

Yes, they get punished for harassment, but what are players genuine reaction when they see such behavior. If they're not reporting them, they're laughing for the most part. Just sayin'.

Not even sure what this thread is supposed to mean, lol.

How is negativity rewarded in anyway?
    1. Roasting 99.9% of the time isn't considered negativity, just joking around.
    2. How is people going "Roasted! Lmao" even a reward...?

Maybe you should add more examples so less people are confused, because it seems like all of these replies are regarding "roasting".

I think you're confusing "rewarded" with "not challenged"

Example: Basic harassment. Someone starts bullying another person. All the friends do nothing or laugh/join in.
There is no reward there. There is no extra "prize" handed out to everyone surrounding.
In this example, no one challenged the situation. And with that, it seems like it is accepted.

And now, we're seeing a lot more negativity due to online presence being common.
Before, we only knew of what we saw and heard in our general area.
We have young teens and children online, as well as the adults.

We know from general experience that younger people tend to be more negative towards others (bullying is more common in primary schools/younger years of high school).
We also know that the actions of others influences everyone around.

With the influx of negativity from immaturity (let's not blame only the young people, as old people are just as guilty of being crabby), and the fact that people very rarely challenge it without being negative themselves, we are seeing an increase beyond what we WERE used to.

No one wants to be the odd one out online, but challenging the negative groups involves stepping away and coming at the problem in a mature and positive manner.

No one listens if they're being shouted at.
No one likes listening if all you prove is that they're wrong.

People forget that and wonder why they aren't being listened to.
They see the negativity not changing and people joining the masses.
That's where I believe the false idea of "rewarded'' is coming from.

This is grossly oversimplifying things. You fail to include anything about context, which could be anything from legitimate bullying to someone "roasting" someone for a perfectly legitimate reason. Obviously, if someone out of the blue insults a guy just going about his business then yes, that's wrong, and is very rarely met with collective praise. That said, if someone did something to provoke a player and they decide to retaliate, then I see no reason to treat that as a bad thing. I feel like you're using a bit of a strawman argument with that stuff about them calling it "unfair" when they get insulted, or people always responding with "roasted lol!" In my 4 years here, I've never seen people like that, and I doubt you have either. That said, I see where you're coming from, and I don't entirely disagree, but I think your argument would be a lot more convincing if you generalized a bit less and used more realistic examples.

However, I am not talking about just here. I am talking about society as a whole. I know a lot of roasting is a joke, but to other people it may not be a joke. It's about seeing things from other peoples perspective as well.

Agreed. Nowadays people think it's normal to put up a sarcastic, bitchy, sassy attitude and get all the likes for it.

Yes, sometimes roasting is just for fun and no harm is done, but I've seen threads where people are being serious, and people call them shit like 'hun, sweetheart, honey' etc and just are extremely mean to the person making a serious thread and they get likes for it. I get what you mean Expe. I've seen serious threads where people are trying to have a discussion and it ends up with people 'roasting' others by straight up insulting them, not even relating to the original topic anymore.
