    Read If:
    • You want your Minecraft to run Faster
    • You know how to download and use Optifine
    • You like bonus content and use Forge
    • You are willing to comment about whether or not this helped you

    Plugins:
While this is primarily about Optifine and fine-tuning its settings, there is a second mod I recommend using as well. I will go over it in very minor detail near the bottom. For your ease:
    Optifine
    BetterFPS
    Forge

    Optifine:
Explanation given only where I feel I need to. If I skipped features It's because they don't matter :P

    Video Settings:
    • Graphics: Fancy
      • While Fast is a better performance boost, I also like to have a sleek look. Fancy gives leaves transparency, for example. But if you need the boost more, turn this to Fast.
    • Smooth Lighting: Off
    • Fog: Off
    • Render Distance: 6 (PVP/Creative) - 8 (Survival)
      • The default settings for servers only show entities within a 50-70 block radius (3-4 chunks). This easily allows you to load what you need to see beyond nearby entities and is a significant performance improvement.
      • If you want more from this, I don't recommend going above 8-10. Please play with this to see the performance difference.
    • Max Framerate: Unlimited
    • Use VBOs: On

    • Mipmap Levels: 4
    • Anisotropic Filtering: Off
    • Clear Water: Off (PvP) - On (Survival)
    • Better Grass: Off (PvP) - On (Survival)
    • Connected Textures: Off
    • Better Snow: Off (PvP) - On (Survival)
    • Custom Colors: Off
    • Smooth Biomes: Off (PvP) - On (Survival)
    • Natural Textures: Off (PvP) - On (Survival)
    • Custom Items: On (Or your texture pack is useless)

    • Smooth FPS: On
    • Fast Render: On
    • Chunk Updates: 1
    • Lazy Chunk Loading: On
    • Smooth World: On
    • Fast Math: On
    • Dynamic Updates: On

    • Weather: Off (PvP) - On (Survival)
    • Rest of the settings don't need to be touched!

    • Clouds: Off (PvP) - On (Survival)
    • Tree: Fast (PvP) - Smart (Survival)
    • Translucent Blocks: Fast
    • Dropped Items: Fast
    • Rain & Snow: Fast
    • Vignette: Fast

    • These ones are a little more custom to your style. The more you can turn off, the faster, but the worse things will look. Here is what I use:
    • Water Animated: On
    • Fire Animated: On
    • Redstone Animated: Off
    • Flame Animated: On
    • Void Particles: Off
    • Rain Splash: Off
    • Potion Particles: On
    • Terrain Animated: Off
    • Firework Particles: On
    • Lava Animated: On
    • Portal Animated: On
    • Explosion Animated: On
    • Smoke Animated: On
    • Water Particles: Off
    • Portal Particles: Off
    • Dripping Water/Lava: On
    • Textures Animated: Off
    • Particles: Decreased

    BetterFPS:
Basically, leave it default on Riven's Half algorithm. Changing to other algorithms provided in my experience has been worse off.

Everyone has different computer specs so I don't think this is really the "optimal" settings for everyone.

Computer specs certainly play their part, but they do not change the impact these settings have. The lower-end computers may need to adjust some of these settings lower than I've posted or turn extra things off, but if you have not at least made the recommended changes in these threads then I promise you have no idea what you are missing :)

Specs play a huge part and do have a great impact.

They do not impact what these settings do. They impact the need to adjust them. You can literally have the best rig on the market, or the worst, and this will still impact performance positively.
