well okay, interesting contribution to the forums
This elephant most likely ate the other’s poop for the nutrients within the feces. This is known as Coprophagia (I don’t recommend googling this at all) and it is common for animals like elephants, koalas, dogs, and others. It’s usually the young who engage in the consumption of their mother’s feces, and the predigested meal helps the young easily get nutrients.
For example, koalas eat their mother’s “poop” (actually it’s called pap, which is much more watery and a little bit different) in order to introduce bacteria to their system. This is extremely important as the bacteria helps koalas digest the eucalyptus leaves their diet revolves around. Without such an introduction, the eucalyptus leaves would be much harder to consume and harmful.
This is my theory at least. I feel sooo bad about that elephant that had to be penetrated by a trunk.
