Today is no day like any other. The 9th of December in Australia will now be known as the day in which gay marriage was legalised. Although the marriages won't be able to commence until 9th January (they must be lodged a month prior to the ceremony), all couples (including gay, etc) who have married overseas will have their union recognised by the law. I am proud to say I was part of this change. I voted "yes" for marriage equality in the survey in which, with the rest of Australia's votes, 'encouraged' Parliament to amend the law. Even though it took us a while to get here, at least we are here. 26th in-line. I find this amazing since Australia Day falls on the 26th day of January. Maybe 26 is our lucky number... I can't believe that I was part of such a large movement and can proudly tell this story to my kids and grandkids some day... As always, stay strong Australia.
I have a friend who is gay and is having issues in his life atm. He was actually so happy when they voted yes it was really nice to see. I'm glad they passed it.
pfft, typical australia just following new zealands lead, only a few years later In all seriousness, this is great news, and certainly something I was surprised about when the results of the vote came through (since it was a postal vote, I didn't think many youth would be voting). Congrats Australia.
