We're going outside for 17 minutes to honor the 17 victims of the shooting. A kid asked me "But why? You're just going to be marked absent" and I replied "There's kids down in Florida who are going to be marked absent for every day for the rest of the year. They're never going to show up to school again."
Children and adults alike died that day because of a government that has failed in gun control and failed to provide support for those struggling emotionally or mentally. I hope that protests such as this will bring further attention to the issue.
There was a shooting at my own school in December after a basketball game ended but thankfully there were no casualties. If nobody dies, nobody cares. It won't make the news and it won't bring change because until you can lay down a corpse in court the government won't care. It's horrible that this sort of incident has to happen for change to come but if change doesn't come now it never will.
It's important that you take a stand for what you believe in, and that's what I plan on doing; I'll be writing letters to the congressmen in the primaries that are coming up and expressing how important gun control and mental health support is to me and the people my age. Be the change you want to see in the world.
Praise brotha. My school's having an optional event tomorrow where our principal/other staff members talk alongside students about the tragedy. Although I thankfully never experienced a shooting in any way, that doesn't take away from how I feel. No one ever deserves to go through that type of event.
