I'd like to make a quick thread about a recent natural disaster that has happened, and is still happening. Seeing that we are a diverse community, I'll put some notes that will assist you in understanding what I'm talking about. Cyclone Debbie from Space: Spoiler: What is a tropical cyclone? What is a tropical cyclone? Tropical cyclones are low pressure systems that form over warm tropical waters and have gale force winds (sustained winds of 63 km/h or greater and gusts in excess of 90 km/h) near the centre. Spoiler: What is cyclone Debbie? What is Cyclone Debbie? Tropical Cyclone Debbie grew from a tropical low at sea to a category 4 before reaching land. Located in the region of North Queensland, Australia, the cyclone's winds have been recorded reaching 250km/h. It was originally tracked to hit land through Townsville early Monday morning. As all cyclones do, they change their direction, and it hit land between Townsville and Mackay through Airlie Beach at about 1pm this (Tuesday) afternoon. Usually cyclones make their landfall during the night, so this was an interesting event for us to witness. Original map: Current map (as of 4pm 28th Mar): My family live in the area, but they have not experienced anything intense (thank god). Cyclones are quite life threatening. There have been many reports of people being injured due to structures in Proserpine not being able to withstand such cyclonic weather. For instance, someone has been seriously injured because of a wall collapsing. As you can see, the cyclone has degraded to a category 3 and will eventually turn into a tropical low (just a belt of rain), heading south east (where I live). This will bring massive amounts of rain, possibly reaching and exceeding 400mm, leading to flooding. I hope everyone that was involved in this cyclone is okay and that clean up will not be too strenuous. Spoiler: My experience [Biggest cyclone recorded] My own experience I experienced the worst tropical cyclone recorded, named Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi, in Feb 2011 (I was 11 turning 12). Image of its track: This one reached category 5 with winds reaching 290km/h. For those overseas to understand how large this storm was, here is a comparison of it with other parts of the world. A cyclone like this was quite scary from the warnings on the tv to the power being cut for hours. I hope this can serve as both a tribute and an educational piece.
I can update that the low has reached south east Queensland. All schools and universities have been closed. (Yay?). It is flooding down my street so I'm in for some Sh!t
we have to stay indoors. its way too dangerous to be outside right now. sorry..i know pictures are like evidence. You can Google it if you need the proof.
