If you don't know already, Common core is a completely new curriculum being tested in the United States. It is starting out with math and English, bug is slowly moving its new curriculum into history, science, and even languages. Common core first introduced itself in the year of 2015, when the class of 2019 were still 8th graders. (Middle school 3rd year). The authors of common core are in the process are in the process of completely rewriting the curriculum of education in all subjects. They are creating new standardised tests called the SBAC. Which stands for Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.
Because common core is a new thing, they obviously have to have lab rats right, to test it out. Unfortunately, they have decided to make the lab rats a class in which have to pass this new test in order to graduate. Seems simple at first, Teachers teach you about the material and you pass the test on it. Actually, it's not that simple. The common core advisors have failed to realise this. First off, if you are not good at school, if you are not the smartest or you have not learned the material already you are basically screwed and here's why. To put it simply, you are alone. And for this I am speaking of the class of 2019. The class of 2019 is one that will be monitored heavily by colleges and people researching the effects of common core. Wondering why I mention the class of 2019 as the 'core' to this rant? Well the class of 2019 are the lab rats of common core. The courses are being introduced as they move along. Integrated 1 was introduced in their freshman year of high school. Integrated 2 was introduced in their sophomore year, and integrated 3 will be introduced in their junior year. Please note how I say introduced. The class of 2018, or the year above class of 2019 do not have to pass the common core test to graduate high school, therefore they do not have to take integrated math, which is common core math. Furthermore, the students in the class of 2019 who are in advanced math do not have to take common core math because their math level is one year above the usual, which is why they're in advanced. I am unsure whether they have to take the test though. Getting back on topic, the main problem of common core is how it is being executed and taught. The class of 2019 are being taught it fresh. The teachers teaching them have never taught it before, it's new to them too and it causes much confusion not only with the students but with the teachers as well about the new curriculum. So the students cannot be tutored. Their parents don't know anything about what their child is being taught and the teachers don't know it any better than the students. This leads to much confusion and poor grades. The class of 2019 is simply expected to pass the test. It doesn't matter if they don't understand, and the system has failed to realise they're setting students up for failure. Side note, students are expected to work in teams to "help each other out" which is really code for "if you have someone who knows the general concept already you're lucky have them do all the work. But if none of you have a clue sucks to be you". They emphasise that working in teams brings a new perspective to math. It is degrading on students who have always been told to learn at their own pace but it's impossible more than it was already. If one person doesn't get it then your whole group doesn't get it. That's their logic. And disregard the fact that math is kind of meant to be done alone, and not everyone works well in groups. They are forcing us to learn a necessary skill in a very poor way. I understand learning to work in teams is an essential skill to have but I feel like this isn't the way to teach it. I feel it should be taught when all members have a common goal in mind, not different versions of "I hate this" "this is too slow and easy" "this is too confusing" and "we never learned this". The system is expressing ideas of learning at your own pace and linking math to more realistic situations but has again failed to comprehend that not everyone works in the same ways. The curriculum everyone has been complaining about for years before has just gotten worse.
TL;DR Common Core is not an improvement and the class of 2019 has too many expectations to fufill and nothing to do it with.

ok in 2014, when they first started developing the system, i had a hella hard time, i don't remember the problems exactly, but i remember asking my dad for help and he couldn't even do it, but thank god, that my state got rid of common core, we are still learning the 'original way'
but anyway, i looked up some problems and examples, and let me just say, it is too complex.

    like why

This is why you should move to other programs, such as IGCSE, CBSE, etc. They're harder and more intensive, but you learn a lot along the way, and not to mention those syllabi have a diverse collection of subjects, such as Computer Science, ESS, Eco, B&M, etc.

Class of 2019 is my class, actually, I am currently in integrated 2. My math level is at a precalculus level, I'm taking online classes so next semester I can skip ahead hopefully.

I understand what you're saying, common core math sucks, and to an extent I agree, but give the teachers a little of a break because it's not like they know how to teach it that well, since they are just being given the material as well.

I understand your point actually, though. It's a little unfair to the kids with a lot more potential in maths. There's ways around it though.

Common core is a huge thing in my school. I love the concept of it but the executed it in a horrible way, in my opinion. It's very confusing.
