YOUTUBE REWIND 2018 DISCUSSION

Here it is:

I can say with confidence that the majority here believe that YouTube gave us a false representation of YouTube for 2018. Starting with trends that have been around for years, such as mukbangs, k pop and ASMR, they failed to rewind on the year, 2018, itself. Although it was pleasing to see the inclusion of animators in this rewind, many other YouTube creators who were involved in the most popular videos for the year, were left out. It seems as though they were attempting to force a friendly, innocent, Disney-like front of YouTube down everybody's throats.

I frequently watch YouTube and none of the YouTubers I watch made it in :( (Shane Dawson, h3h3, jenna/julien, and more)

i only recognized like 3 people
the only thing "ok" about it was the music, but they showed content which wasn't really super popular (the daddy shark videos, the asmr videos)
the only thing i can understand making it in is fortnite (which imo, they used way too much of)

but we all expected it to be bad
the last decent one was the 2015 one so \o/

 

I wasn't into these videos, but I swear this was only a big thing on YouTube last year...?

The music wasn't too bad. I think they need minimal to zero dialogue (to avoid cringe) and to just play music while showing us what trended on YouTube for the year - LIKE THE PREVIOUS YEARS.

Yea it was horrible, we can all agree. The reasons for why it has gone downhill are numerous.

As opposed to Youtube 2012-2013, which have great like-dislike ratios, Youtube Rewind 2018:

• Was far too politically charged and obvious about it (I'm sure we can all get behind a message for equality but Youtube low-key jammed it down our throats this year and it went overboard and became a turnoff to even people on the political left)
• There was less Youtubers and more traditional TV: Will Smith, who doesn't even fucking Youtube regularly, had something like the most airtime out of all participants; Talk-show hosts were given a spotlight, including one of the most hated, John Oliver (which is asinine as they don't even have Youtube-specific shows, they just post clips of their interviews which initially aired on television)
• There was hardly any people involved that anyone could recognize (not to be rude but I could literally only pick out like 10 people, and 4 of them were animators).
• There was no Pewdiepie (or any pewds at all) vs T-Series, no Logan Paul-KSI (I don't like them but c'mon that should have made it), no Tik-Tok memes, no homage to those recognized people who died, no Knoe de Wae meme or any other notable trend besides some of the music.
• There was too much Lilly Singh
• No raunchiness at all lmao, which comprises a massive portion of Youtubes community: They couldn't even put it H3H3, Idubbbz, or a hundred other people recognized for being offensive.

Long story short, too little Youtube, far too much political and corporate influence. They betrayed their own creators, fundamentally.

 

H3H3 makes a good point about this. After reviewing this year's rewind, he watches a rewind from when views/likes peaked. He mentions the differences, including that rewind 'creators' were a lot more daring with what they put in, including a YouTuber who had a hit series involving interviewing porn stars. They were a lot more representative of YouTube: the good, the weird and the somewhat interesting. Where was the Paul brother/KSI/Deji fight reference? What about Shane Dawson's "controversial" multiple part-series??? (I put h3h3's video in my original post)

 

So France is represented by a 10-year-old minecraft community and a community for beauty products!

Perhaps one of the worse of YouTube Rewinds.

• Actually managed to make it on the list of "Most Disliked Videos on YouTube" (2nd Behind Justin Bieber. Making it's way to the first).

• Not even Flex Seal can make fix the mess YouTube has spilled in this.

• Jaiden in PewDiePie's Chair but no PewDiePie.

• I N M Y F E E L I N G S C H A L L E N G E. (Seeing Domics do it hurt me so much.)

• They just had to put Will Smith in it didn't they?

• Too many Fortnite jokes and dances.

I'm honestly hopeful that sooner or later some company that actually has good intentions recognises the way youtube is going and makes a rival platform that rights everything that's gone wrong

 

I like how the video is taunting you the whole time with the whole “Let’s give them what they want” thing
I know everyone wanted PewDiePie in it, instead we got fucking Fortnite

On the bright side however, at least the Pauls are no longer in it. Though them being there would probably make it so bad it would’ve been funny.

I really can’t tell you what the point of these even is anymore. It doesn’t represent what YouTube is, nor what anyone wants YouTube to be.
