Staying safe on the internet. Hello! This thread is a tutorial/reminder for keeping your information safe and making sure that all of your accounts remain in your possession, and to make sure your accounts do not get compromised and used for malicious intent by someone else. Two-Factor Authentication This is usually a forgotten service which is provided on (nearly) every social media platform (Including the J&H forums!). Spoiler: Location What is 2FA? It’s confirmation codes sent to your phone via. a 2FA application (Google Authenticator, Authy, ect.) which makes it so that nobody can log into your account unless they enter the code sent to the application. Most of these applications require a phone, but recently, the “Authy” service now works with computers! Yay! https://authy.com/ It is recommended you use this for your social media, including emails, to keep them safe. This service alone will make your account nearly “unhackable”. ------------------------------------------------------- Email Information Your information is very important, all of it. And it’s even more important to keep it safe and in your hands and yours only. Even saying your email in public can be a danger to your accounts safety. This is why you should do your best not to tell anybody your email name. Private emails should also be created if you are planning to share/keep the email public. If you are going to make an email with this purpose, we suggest to not connect any accounts to it, as if it is hacked, you will lose all of those accounts. Also, people can find out a lot about you just by using your email name, more than you maybe think. Points of this section: Never tell anyone your email name. You should always keep a backup email, especially if you are sharing/ using an email for “public” purposes. It is recommended to use different passwords for every account you own. (Forums, Email, Minecraft, etc) But I use my parents email! This is also fine, as most likely your parents will not get the email into much trouble, but still keeping a backup that you know the information to is still useful in this situation, just in case. If your email does get hacked, take a look at this page: https://help.mojang.com/customer/en...-changing-your-email-address-mojang-accounts- How to check if your information has been leaked anywhere on the web: https://haveibeenpwned.com/ This site will locate websites which have leaked your information in some way. (Usually some form of breach). --------------------------------------------------------- Real-Life Information This is probably the most crucial information to keep private. Giving out your full real name, address, or IP address is the worst thing you can do on the internet. Usually, most game services already advise against this. We do too, and if someone leaks your information please report them immediately. However, your information is your responsibility, and if you leak it yourself no action will be taken. But it is VERY DANGEROUS to tell ANYBODY about your real life information. People can track you, stalk you, S.W.A.T you, DDoS you, and potentially worse. Some people will go to great lengths to find your information, including searching these forums. However, all of this could be avoided by simply just not saying it anywhere. This also includes sending nude photos to other people, even in private. Sending nudes is extremely dangerous, even if sent to your boyfriend / girlfriend. If these get leaked, it’s not going to be pretty. The other person may seem friendly now, but could use these photos to blackmail you. ------------------------------------------------------- The importance of your “Internet Protocol Address” What is an IP address? An ip address is basically your “internet tag” and is a set of numbers which is sent to websites on connecting. This can also be dangerous if someone else obtains it. People can set up “fake links”, making them look like they go to a site like printscreen or imgur, when in reality, they go to a site like grabify or iplogger. If someone gets your ip address with malicious intent this can be very dangerous. People could use your ip address in an attempt to track down your location, or use it to DDoS you. People could also obtain your IP address through you playing their minecraft server, so it's recommended to play servers own by trusted people, and not servers that are advertised to be "free op", etc. To prevent this, avoid any suspicious websites or links. If you get sent a “suspicious” link in-game, use this site (or related) to check it: http://www.webtoolhub.com/tn561352-url-redirection-checker.aspx POTENTIALLY UNSAFE SITES: Grabify Iplogger Blasze Ps3cfw Cyber-hub 0x00sec Spylink Sinster If you get a link redirecting to one of these, tell a staff member. For more information, you can find it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack Someone got my IP address and is using it to DDoS me! The most simple solutions to this are: Call up your Internet Service Provider and request for an IP address reset. (Changing your IP address) Unplug your modem for 10 minutes (if this doesn’t work, unplug it for around 24 hours) -------------------------------------------------------- What to do if your account gets hacked The most obvious answer here is the lucky “forgot password” button. However, if this is not an option due to you also losing access to your email somehow, then generally, there should be a section on every social media site/game website for customer service. Here you can request an email change or password reset. Customer service center for mojang: https://help.mojang.com/ For our forums in specific: We don’t have a “customer service” center in specific. The easiest way to get your account back is to try and PM the owners via. Forums using another account. (Or requesting help over discord, but this isn't recommended) ------------------------------------------------------------ Safety inside of the game Our server already has warnings when a user is /msged a link. If you wish to check the link, click “Copy to clipboard”, insert it into the aforementioned URL redirect checker, and contact staff if it is an IPgrabber link. Since there is no “2FA” system for in-game, if your account is hacked contact a Mod+ via. Forums or discord with details about it. Your hacked account will be banned temporarily until you get your account back and appeal it. This is a measure to make sure the hacker isn’t using your account to break any rules, and to prevent punishments against you. --------------------------------------------------------------
I feel like you copied a specific page in a specific sub-forum that only specific people would be able to see.. then again, it has been half a year, and even then I didn't do anything lol
If you're talking about Ezzerlands thread, the only thing I took from that was some of the potential IPgrabber websites. Everything else I wrote from scratch from my own understanding.
Can you expand on this? If you mean that an IP address can directly resolve where you are located, then you are incorrect. An IP cannot show your exact location rather an estimate based on the exchange. You'd need a valid reason and probably a police warrant to obtain the true location.
Well shucks, my IP was extracted through a link that my old “best-friend” set up. Sucks that he took the IP on my bday though.
I remember like on my 15th day as Helper my IP got grabbed. I was so shook and scared that I almost resigned that day.
Let’s be friends, please tell me your address, country name, phone number, safe password and the hours at which there will be no one at your home. You can trust me.
i was on omegle the other day w some friends and this guy was like "well listen here you feminist cunt, im going to grab your ip and boot you off" and i actually peed myself laughing so fucking hard
Skype could be considered an unsafe site, as if you're online on skype, your IP can easily be drawn from anyone.
