Guns are fine as long as they are controlled.

Make it like getting a driver's license. Cars are fine, if you know how to drive one and follow traffic laws.

In 2012 for every justifiable homicide in the United States involving a gun, guns were used in 32 criminal homicides. For the five-year period 2008 through 2012, for every justifiable homicide in the United States involving a gun, guns were used in 38 criminal homicides. (Source www.vpc.org/studies/justifiable15.pdf)

I can't see guns being controlled well enough to reduce this figure to something reasonable so I'm anti-

Also before someone replies saying guns are useful as a scare method to prevent crime, why is it that in countries without guns don't suffer from said lack?

I believe that the problem is the people, not the guns. It's too easy to get a gun in America these days. I've seen videos from mental people who get guns, to videos of children who have killed people because they find them on top of cabinets and they play with them. We need to be more careful with where we put our guns and who get's them. The system is messed up. It frightens me that someone can get a gun just by looking it up online. I feel like we need to limit this. Limit where people can get guns. This doesn't mean that they can't get them, it just means that people who are a risk to society with guns have a harder time getting to them.

This!! This!! and more This!! If someone can be charged with vehicular homicide because a car can be considered a deadly weapon... and people need to at some points retake their drivers test, I believe that this should be similar with guns. I think there should be required training similar to drivers-ed. I think that purchasing a gun should require a stronger background check. In the US, unless it is on your criminal record it won't do anything. It won't keep them out of the hands of those who have been in psych treatment for anger issues etc.

Keep in mind, my grandfather taught me how to shoot, how to take apart and how to clean guns. I personally won't own one because I am aware enough of my issues to know it's the smarter decision.

Oddly enough this thread comes at a time when a deranged 65 year old white male just open fired from his hotel room into a Las Vegas crowd.

Saying we should ban guns is like saying we should ban knifes, cars, bats, hammers, or anything else that can be used to kill someone.

I don't think anyone (on this thread) is saying that we should ban guns...

I think licencing is one of the more effective ways to limit gun violence. Here in NZ I can only remember one major gun incident (ie a mass shooting), and that is partly due to the licence system (and a small population).

Sometimes there are just evil people in the world that want others to suffer for what happened to them. It sucks, but that's just life. There are going to be people like that.

One main example is the Las Vegas gun shooting. I'm sure you'd all heard of it. 50+ people died and 200+ were injured.

I agree with Picks, i think getting a license will decrease the number of terror attacks.

Autos and semi autos are already heavily regulated. Any guns of the type made after 1986 is banned. And the remaining small amount of supply is extremely expensive to obtain, requires evaluation, background checks, extensive ID verification, a license, and is only sold through select stores. Research on the Hughes Amendment.

    Ur dumb.

How old are you cuz you think like a 5 year old.

Guns kill someone almost immediately. Cars for example don't kill immediately.

    Las Vegas > London

But that's not true. The bump fire made the Las Vegas shooter's gun almost fully automatic.

You can still illegally get a gun. All those people with mental health problems or on drugs? No way they passed tests and verification to get a gun.

Which is why the government should crack down on the black market.

I agree with cracking down on the black market, we can't pretend that America's gun control is perfect.

Then how on earth did the Orlando Shooter obtain a semi-automatic high powered weapon legal while he was being investigated by the FBI? Seems like these background checks aren't that thorough.

I agree with that. Sellers aren't following regulations properly, allowing people to get guns more easily than they should. We need to enforce existing laws strictly, not add more redundant regulations.

Well there is a loophole with private sellers/buys. Its commonly called the "Gun Show Loophole" and it basically is a way people can legally sell and purchase guns without having any background check, if it is a private seller. This law should be removed in my opinion.
